Chris Bailey: Professional Biography

Chris Bailey has been active in developing social movement use of the Internet for many years, initially working to build trade union networks. He has worked with US based LaborNet since its formation in 1990. From 1995-1998 he coordinated a worldwide Internet campaign in support of 500 sacked dockworkers in Liverpool, England for which he won widespread recognition within the international trade union movement. In 1997-98 he assisted in the formation of Jinbonet, the Korean NGO Internet network. More recently, he helped found LaborNet Japan.

Chris was the Coordinator of the European Civil Society Internet Rights Project, funded by the Open Society Institute and designed to defend and extend the rights of civil society Internet users in Europe. He is now Policy Coordinator of Internet Rights Bulgaria, an organisation that arose out of the experiences of the European Civil Society Internet Rights project. Internet Rights Bulgaria aims to promote Internet use by social NGOs in Bulgaria and provide information and knowledgeable input concerning the protection of their interests on Internet policy issues. It is intended as the first of a number of similar projects planned for Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans region and is being used as a pilot project to gain experience for use in other countries in the region. Chris is a frequent speaker on social movement use of the Internet at international conferences and events. He has an MA in European Politics.
