John Stewart Beale: Professional Biography
Head of Sector,
Directorate General for the Information Society,
European Commission.

In June 1997, John BEALE was appointed as Head of Sector in DG Information Society to be responsible for international relations with Candidate Countries, the New Independent States and the countries of South Eastern Europe.

Prior to this appointment, John BEALE worked in the European Commission as the Contracts Officer in the Tacis Programme and Project Coordinator in the Framework Programme for Research and Development.

From 1984 to 1985, Mr BEALE worked as a Principal Consultant for Logica Space and Defence Systems.

From 1980 to 1984, Mr BEALE worked at the European Space Agency as the Principal Payload Engineer on the GIOTTO project which took the first photographs of Comet Halley's nucleus.

From 1973 to 1980, Mr BEALE was the Head of a Group at the Royal Greenwich Observatory developing computer systems for the control and instrumentation of optical telescopes at the La Palma Observatory.

Mr BEALE has a Ph. D. in Radio Astronomy from Jodrell Bank, University of Manchester and an Honours Degree from the University of Cambridge, England.

Mr BEALE was born on 3 May 1943. He is married and has four children.
